PRAx Presents: Firas Zreik
A Palestinian-born New Yorker, Firas Zreik has transformed global perception of the kanun, a stringed instrument played on the lap. His treatment of the instrument preserves its identity as a vital part of the Arabic Maqam tradition while stretching its potential as a cultural chameleon. Zreik shapeshifts musically, whether he is joining large orchestras on a concert stage or — as at PRAx — appearing in more intimate jazz settings.
At PRAx, he appears with a quartet. Come experience the resonant depth of the kanun and Zreik’s mastery at creating layered expression through microtonal soundscaping, bold improvisation and a commitment to the exploration of musical and emotional complexity.
