OSU's School of History, Philosophy and Religion Presents: Can AI Alleviate Loneliness?
Part of the Ideas Matter Series: The Ethical Challenges of AI
Should AI be used to address the pervasive issues of loneliness in today's society? Can AI be ethically used in this way? What are the seen and unseen impacts of using a digital entity for social interaction?
In an event featuring Ramón Alvarado, Associate Professor of Philosophy at the University of Oregon, join in a survey of debates on this topic to gain some philosophical clarity on both the technology itself — What it is? How does it work? What can it do and what can it not do? — and explore the phenomenon of loneliness and its distinct manifestations and sources. Alvarado shares that once we have clarified what we mean by each of those two things, we can better address the promises, limitations and implications of these novel technologies in this particular context.
This event is free and open to all.
