Center for the Humanities Presents: Worlds Beyond: Why Science Fiction Matters
Join us for a conversation about the possible worlds imagined by science fiction. Do these stories have the power to help us envision creative solutions to thorny, real-world issues? Or are they just fun flights of fancy? This panel brings together perspectives from professors who write science fiction, study it, and create the new technologies that push the boundaries of what's possible.
Presenters each have a unique expertise in science fiction. They include:
- Annabelle Dolidon, Professor of French, Portland State University
- Evan Gottlieb, Professor of English, Oregon State University
- Kagan Tumer, Professor of Robotics, Oregon State University
- Jenée Wilde, Associate Teaching Professor of English, University of Oregon
This panel is part of a suite of events about science fiction at PRAx. Ted Chiang will give a talk, “The Art of Science Fiction,” on April 4. And the exhibit A Tomorrow: Monsters and Relics from Asia and Africa will add to the conversation. Come early or stay afterwards to check it out!
