Light Paintings
Lori Hepner | Hatfield Marine Science Center
In collaboration with the Patricia Valian Reser Center for Creative Arts, Hatfield Marine Science Center is pleased to present the works of contemporary artist Lori Hepner.
Lori Hepner’s photographic and projection works are gestural abstractions, created from the movement of her own body. The forms are light drawings that become maps of muscle memory and bodily experience in select landscapes.
The PRAx-Hatfield collaboration centers on small exhibitions of artists who have engaged with oceanographic science and observation. Seeking out professional contemporary artists exploring topics ranging from watershed ecology to climate change, the initiative will frequently feature creatives who have been in residence at sea or within other institutions of marine research.
About the artist
Lori Hepner is a Pittsburgh-based new media artist working primarily in performative light painting, fine art photography and community-centered public art projects. She has spent considerable time over the last five years in artist residents in the Arctic, including in Finland, Iceland, Canada and Norway. She also curates exploratory journeys for other artists in an exploratory residency program, River Route. In her work, she performs digitized, luminous traces of landscapes that are under threat due to climate by gesturally redrawing landscapes with muscle memories from Arctic journeys. A desire to experience places that are currently changing has drawn her outdoors.
Hepner currently teaches at Penn State University.
