PRAx and the DARKSIDE CINEMA Present: Free Film Friday: Beau Travail (Claire Denis, 1999)

Claire Denis’ gorgeous adaptation of Herman Melville’s Billy Budd, reset in Djibouti, at a remote outpost manned by the French Foreign Legion. The Cesar Award winning cinematography by Agnes Godard is accompanied by a score adapted from Benjamin Britton’s 1951 opera, also based on Melville’s story. Beau Travail topped the Village Voice readers’ poll as the best film released in the U.S. in 2000 and was recently ranked the 7th best film of all time by the British Film Institute’s Sight and Sound Magazine.
