PRAx and the DARKSIDE CINEMA Present: Free Film Friday: Killer of Sheep
Charles Burnett pushes boundaries in Killer of Sheep, his no-budget, neorealist study of everyday life in the Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles. Today recognized as a landmark American film, Burnett stands with the best and brightest of the belatedly celebrated LA Rebellion of 1970s Black filmmakers at UCLA. In 2017, thirty years after its initial release, the Motion Picture Academy awarded Burnett an Honorary Oscar for his work on this little-seen masterpiece.
Our viewing will be followed by host OSU University Distinguished Professor Jon Lewis and his guest, filmmaker Chester Toye.
Free Film Fridays is a series of free screenings hosted by Distinguished Professor of Film Jon Lewis, selected to spark discussions across disciplines. Professor Lewis will briefly introduce the film and lead a post-screening discussion with OSU faculty experts on the film's topic. Learn more.
