The Immigrant Story, PRAx and the Center for the Humanities Present: I Lived to Tell the World: Exhibition Opening and Panel

Please join us for the opening of "I Lived to Tell the World," an exhibition featuring the stories of Oregon genocide survivors.

The exhibition features lauded Portland photographer Jim Lommasson’s images of objects that survivors could carry with them throughout their desperate journeys. Participants also shared handwritten testimonies — stories, memories, poems, drawings — about these objects.

The accompanying panel discussion will reflect on the power of personal narratives to tell history. What happens when we shift from a unified version of history, the kind told in a textbook, to a mosaic of individual experiences? How do personal stories – told through cherished objects and fragmented memories – help us capture the human experiences of genocide and war?

The panel will bring together Katherine Hubler, OSU Historian and editor of Listening to Survivors: Four Decades of Holocaust Memorial Week at Oregon State University; Saron Khut, speaker and genocide survivor; and Elizabeth Mehren, author of I Lived to Tell the World: Stories from Survivors of Holocaust, Genocide, and the Atrocities of War. Jim Lommasson will join for Q&A to follow.

In addition, the Corvallis-Benton County Public Library will host moderated discussions of I Lived to Tell the World in advance of this event on January 18 and 25, from 2-3 p.m. Copies of the book will be available to check out.
