Until Margot Lee Shetterly told their story, the Black women whose mathematical mastery helped put Americans in space were largely unknown. Her book, Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race, topped the New York Times bestseller list and was turned into a hit 2016 film. In her keynote, Shetterly talks about race, gender, science, the history of technology, and the surprising ways women and people of color have contributed to American innovation. In sweeping, dramatic detail, she sheds light on a forgotten but key chapter in our history, instilling a sense of wonder and possibility.
