Center for the Humanities and the College of Agricultural Sciences Present: Sean Sherman: The (R)evolution of Indigenous Foodways

“Control your food, and you control your destiny.” That’s what drives Oglala Lakota Sioux chef Sean Sherman, founder of The Sioux Chef, to revitalize Indigenous food systems and celebrate the rich culinary heritage of Native communities. His menus are inspired by the seasons and the land, using only ingredients native to North America.

Sherman’s Minneapolis restaurant, Owamni, opened in 2021, showcasing Indigenous foods and culture with a majority Native staff. The following year, Owamni won the James Beard Award for Best New Restaurant in America. In 2023, Sherman was named one of Time magazine’s 100 Most Influential People and received the Julia Child Award for culinary activism and innovation.
